I love science. Mankind owes much of its progress to scientific endeavors. Having said that, there is no resident group within the six degrees of separation that is more utterly incapable of ever finding God. The reasons should be obvious, but decades of fawning over scientists have brought mankind to a point where we are blinded. Why will scientists never find God? I will give you three reasons: Mindset, toolset, and location.
First, let’s examine the scientific mindset. Over the last several decades that which was once relegated to hushed whispers and prejudiced opinoins in the halls of academia have grown into a loud and proud public display rejecting the very notion of God. Studies tell us that up to 86% of scientists are atheists. Not open minded, not questioning… Atheists. Experiences relayed by those few who have tried to open the doors of science to the possibility of God are well documented. Rejection, ridicule, threats of halted career advancement, etc.
Many years ago, I remember reading the following quote: “There is plenty of room in the equation for the creation of the universe for a miracle”. These days such an opinion would be considered heresy. Bottom line, science is not interested in finding God. They want to understand the universe. Most of them honestly, albeit erroneously, believe in an impersonal answer to creation. In their limited thinking, most believe they will end up disproving God.
This may sound surprising, but I actually have no problem with this approach, if only they had an open mind as they search. Why? There are many examples of converted atheists who set out to disprove God and ended up convinced of God’s existence. The difference is that these individuals were willing to objectively investigate multiple lines of evidence before reaching a conclusion. Science today is not like that. Scientists have a limited view based on their specific areas of expertise. They observe, theorize, and attempt to prove their theory. Even worse, those unproven theories become a working model and are taken as proof until disproven.
Next, there is the obvious problem of toolset. We do not currently possess the proper tools to examine our universe fully. As an example, you may remember that science has “theorized” the existence of four natural laws. Gravity, electromagnetism, the strong force and the weak force. Gravity and electromagnetism are proven, but the other two are not yet proven. They are still theories (especially the weak force), yet how many times have you heard them alluded to as fact? We are far, far away from having the tools necessary for a complete examination of the universe.
Finally, there is the problem of location. I mentioned earlier that we owe much to science. One of the things we owe science is proof of what we now call the standard cosmological model, or Big Bang. We have proven that the universe and therefore space, time and matter, all had a beginning. Therefore, the creating force, whatever name you want to use, must by definition exist outside the universe. Yet, science continues to proclaim that “we will figure out the universe” in a tone that proclaims they will learn what it is that we call God. Knowing that God has to exist OUTSIDE the universe, it should be obvious that we are not even looking in the right place! We are looking for God inside his creation. He’s not there!
I wish science all the blessings and knowledge they can be given. Mankind needs science to figure out the universe, and the sooner the better. Only then will we recognize the truth embodied in an old saying that has been attributed to multiple sources and paraphrased in many ways… “A little science estranges Man from God, but much science leads them back to Him”.
